With the possibility of a cyclone and potential flooding in Queensland, it’s important to prepare now to stay safe. Please take the time to check the following:
Before the Cyclone or Flooding:
Essential Supplies: Ensure you have torches, candles spare batteries, power packs, drinking water, non-perishable food, and a first aid kit. If you have a generator, check that it’s working.
Medications: Make sure you have enough prescription and over-the-counter medications to last two weeks.
Securing Your Property: Clear your yard of loose objects, secure outdoor furniture, and trim any overhanging branches and remove anything that could hold large amounts of water (e.g., buckets, old car tires, containers, blocked drains) to reduce mosquito risks and water hazards.
Mosquito /bug spray: for your protection and well-being
Know Your Flood Risk: If you’re in a flood-prone area please inform you Team Leader or line manager, be prepared with sandbags and know your evacuation routes.
In Case of Flooding:
If water starts rising, move to higher ground and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
The safest part of your home during strong winds is a small, enclosed space like the bathroom. Use a mattress for extra protection if needed.
Keep an emergency go-bag ready with important documents, emergency tools, a flashlight, water, food, and essential medications.
Health & Safety:
For your health and safety, please ensure you stay away from dirty flood water and mud, as they can contain harmful bacteria and debris. If you come into contact with flood water or mud, use protective clothing such as gumboots and gloves.
Please stay safe, stay informed, and check local updates from emergency services.
If you need assistance, don’t hesitate to contact your Team Leader or the Focused Health Care office.
